James F. Goodhart was first elected to the Palos Verdes Estates City Council in 2005, was re-elected to the Council in 2009, and is now serving his third four-year term. He brings a strong record of public service to the Council. Councilmember Goodhart previously served four years on the Board of Education for the Palos Verdes Peninsula Unified School District and the Southern California Regional Occupation Center (SCROC). Along with his commitment to education, Councilmember Goodhart served as a Trustee of the Peninsula Education Foundation, a Director of the San Pedro/Peninsula YMCA, and served on the City’s Planning Commission and as a member of the Finance Committee. He is actively involved in the League of California Cities currently serving as Chair the Environmental Quality policy committee, the New Mayors and Councilmembers Department, and the Board of Directors of the Los Angeles Division, and a member of the Board of Directors for the state League. Regionally, Councilmember Goodhart is Chair of the South Bay Cities Council of Governments. He is a representative to the South Bay Service Council of the Metropolitan Transit Authority and a member of the Board of Directors of the Palos Verdes Transit Authority since 2005.

The Goodhart family became residents of the city in 1980. He and his wife Ann have been married since 1977. Their two children are graduates of Palos Verdes Peninsula High School. Mr. Goodhart was employed in the aerospace industry and is registered as a mechanical engineer in California and is certified as a Project Management Professional. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in aeronautical engineering from Embry Riddle Aeronautical University and a Masters of Business Administration Degree from Loyola Marymount University.

Councilmember Goodhart is dedicated to preserving and protecting the quality of life that we enjoy here in Palos Verdes Estates. He is also committed to fiscal responsibility, local government control and improving emergency preparedness for residents. His experience and background in public service and his dedication to the community enable Mr. Goodhart to complement the efforts of his fellow Council members toward these objectives.
