MMASC Summer Session Conference

The Municipal Management Association of Southern California held their Annual Summer Session on July 31, 2014. The Summer Session is a premier annual event and one of the greatest benefits of a MMASC membership. The one-day “mini- conference” was held at the University of Southern California’s Davidson Conference Center.

The theme of the 2014 Summer Session was “Developing you Brand” which brought together leaders in local government to discuss how today’s successful public sector professionals have maximized opportunities for career development. In between the speakers, attendees enjoyed networking breaks to further discuss speaker-initiated talking points.

The featured speakers included:

• Keynote Speaker, Scott Grossberg spoke on Objective Thinking: Fundamentals and Application. He suggested utilization techniques to transform your mindset to help create high and attainable career expectation.

• Ryder Smith, Tripepi Smith & Associates and Filiberto Gonzales, Social Impact Consulting spoke on the importance of a brand to an organizations identity. Additionally, they emphasized the need to keep up with current trends, social media practices, and technology in order to be effective “branders.”

• Tammy Letourneau, City of Costa Mesa and Scott Ochoa, City of Glendale discussed strategies on how to develop your skill sets within your current job therefore making yourself a more valuable employee. Tammy and Scott also stressed the importance of mentorships and how to attain one.

“Our educational events create an intimate and unique networking opportunities,” commented Carl Alameda, Senior Management Analyst II for the City of La Cañada Flintridge. “We develop leadership within MMASC by engaging new members and by connecting our members with each other at events such as our Summer Session held at USC.”

MMASC is the largest association of its kind in the nation and is recognized by both the International City/County Management Association (ICMA) and the League of California Cities. The organization’s nearly 500 members represent local governments serving an estimated 15 million residents. The membership is composed of City Managers, HR Directors, Analysts, Graduate Students, Interns, Executive Recruiters, Private Sector Consultants, Non-Profit Managers, County Administrators, and Special District professionals representing local governments within a nine-county area of Southern California. MMASC was formed in 1953 to address the professional needs of local government employees and their private sector counterparts.
