Winter brings cooler days, longer nights and increased energy use as households rely on heaters, hot water and lighting to stay comfortable. To help California Choice Energy Authority’s (CalChoice) member agencies support their communities this season, the following practical tips can help customers stay warm efficiently and manage energy costs.
“As temperatures fall, it is easy for energy use to rise without noticing,” said Interim CEO Rob Johnson. “Simple actions such as improving insulation or lowering thermostat settings can lead to meaningful savings and help reduce stress on the regional grid.”
With many spending more time at home or traveling for the holidays, small shifts in daily habits can improve comfort and conserve energy.
- Keep warm air inside by sealing gaps around doors and windows
- Open curtains during the day to let in sunlight and close them at night to retain heat
- Use space heaters safely and only when heating occupied areas
- Set thermostats to about 68°F when home and lower them during sleep or when away
- Replace furnace filters regularly to maintain strong airflow and efficient heating
- Limit hot water use by taking shorter showers and running appliances on cold settings
- Unplug electronics and appliances when they are not in use to reduce standby energy consumption
While Flex Alerts are most commonly associated with summer heat waves, they are not limited to warm-weather months. Although less frequent, winter Flex Alerts do occur when grid conditions tighten. Because of this, it remains helpful for our member agencies to encourage its customers to stay signed up for alerts year-round.
“When customers participate in conservation during peak periods, it strengthens the energy system for everyone,” continued Rob. “Through these collective efforts, communities can stay warm while using energy wisely.”
