Jeff Duhamel, CEO and Principal Consultant of MuniEnvironmental, along with Vice President Morgan McCarthy, attended the San Gabriel Valley City Managers’ Association (SGVCMA) Spring Workshop, “Bridging the Gap between Then and Now,” on Wednesday, June 20. MuniEvironmental also served as silver-level sponsors of the event, which took place at the Kellogg West Conference & Event Center at Cal Poly Pomona.
“The cities that comprise the membership of the San Gabriel Valley City Managers’ Association represent an important part of the Greater Los Angeles metropolitan area, with unique waste management needs,” says Duhamel. “I and the rest of the MuniEnvironmental team appreciate the opportunity to share the education and up-to-date information local officials need to achieve their goals, reduce costs, update ordinances and navigate agreements.”
Organized by the City of Walnut and City Manager Rob Wishner, incoming president of the SGVCMA, in partnership with the City of Duarte and City Manager Darrell George, outgoing president of the SGVCMA, the Workshop addressed topics including November Ballot Measures, Managing Millennials, Technology & Law Enforcement and Crisis Communications 101.
Of particular interest to the MuniEnvironmental team was L.A. County Director of Public Works Mark Pestrella’s presentation on storm water measures, including an overview of a proposed property tax—the Safe, Clean Water Program—that would fund storm water capture and cleaning projects.
“Annually, not only more than 100 billion gallons of storm water but also 4,200 tons of trash and pollutants are deposited into the ocean from L.A. County,” says Duhamel. “This measure would levy a 2.5 cent per square foot tax on spaces such as structures or concrete, through which water does not pass or passes extremely slowly, on private property. The revenue from the tax is intended to fund projects that capture and clean storm water.”
The San Gabriel Valley City Managers’ Association, an informal affiliation of the City Managers within San Gabriel Valley, was established as a regional subdivision of the City Managers’ Department of the League of California Cities. The Association promotes the purposes and goals of the League of California Cities and supports the personal development and enrichment of its members through the promotion and conduct of meetings, seminars, social events and discussions.
The City of Industry, one of the Association’s member cities, also is a MuniEnvironmental client. MuniEnvironmental has engaged with the City of Industry to support efforts to meet compliance and implement the mandatory outreach and technical assistance program requirements of AB 341 and AB 1826. The three-year agreement, the culmination of a partnership that began in 2000, includes two additional one-year options.
