As summer temperatures rise, keeping cool becomes a top priority for many households. However, increased use of air conditioning and other cooling appliances can put a significant strain on the power grid. To help mitigate the risk of blackouts and ensure a stable energy supply, California Choice Energy Authority (CalChoice) encourages its associate members to remind customers about smart energy-saving practices.
“Maintaining a reliable energy supply is crucial, especially during peak summer months when demand skyrockets,” said CalChoice Executive Director Jason Caudle. “Simple changes in your daily routine like unplugging all electronics and appliances that are not in use, can significantly alleviate strain on the grid.”
During the summer months, individuals can implement the following tips to help stay cool while conserving energy:
- Regularly clean or replace air conditioning filters for optimal performance
- Minimize dryer use and hang clothes to air dry outdoors
- Set your thermostat to 75°F when at home and to 85°F when you’re away
- Keep blinds, shades and curtains closed during the hottest parts of the day
- Use dimmer switches or timers for your lights
Flex Alerts, voluntary notifications issued by the California Independent System Operator (CAISO) during energy shortages, are a critical tool for maintaining grid stability. Associate members should remind their customers of this resource and encourage them to opt-in. By advocating for participation in Flex Alerts, customers can help protect the community’s power supply and save money on their energy bills.
“By promoting this resource and highlighting the benefits of participating, our associate members can help ensure a more resilient energy system for everyone,” continued Jason. “Let’s do our part this summer and embrace energy efficiency strategies to help navigate the warmer months ahead.”
