The Annual Municipal Seminar: Cities for the Win!

The California Contract Cities Association’s (CCCA) 57th Annual Municipal Seminar was held at the Renaissance Indian Wells Resort & Spa May 12-15, 2016. Gustavo Camacho of Pico Rivera handed the gavel over to newly elected President Lou La Monte of Malibu at the Installation Dinner Saturday night. The 2016-2017 Board of Directors was installed including Vice President, Michael Davitt, La Cañada Flintridge and Secretary/Treasurer, Sandra Armenta, City of Rosemead.

Prior to installation, elected officials and city staff enjoyed several days of educational seminars covering a variety of issues facing cities today, including the crime impacts of Prop 47, trends in transportation and even a special session on surviving an active shooter. Attendees received an informative update from Sheriff Jim McDonnell on the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department services to contract cities, recruiting efforts and the impacts of Prop 47. Several State and Federal legislators were on hand to provide insights from the respective capitols on the impact cities can have on legislation. A particular highlight was the panel of Congresswomen Loretta Sanchez and Janice Hahn who covered a full array of issues impacting Washington DC.

Networking and socializing opportunities abounded with the schedule created by the City of Malibu, hosts for this year’s conference. Highlights included a wine tasting, fireworks show and a recharge lounge for both mobile devices and conference participants.

This year, the Los Angeles County Library provided a kids activity zone and library lounge to keep little ones busy while parents expanded their local government aptitude.

The Annual Municipal Seminar would not be possible without the support of the Associate Members, who step up to support the California Contract Cities Association year after year. Boasting over 500 attendees, this meeting of local government leaders is one of the most powerful learning and networking opportunities available all year.

Later this year, the CCCA Fall Conference will be held on Catalina Island on September 9-11. Visit www.contractcities.org to learn more.
