Tripepi Smith Executes on Executive Messaging for California Institute of the Arts

Engaging with a third higher education institution—California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) —Tripepi Smith Principal Katherine Griffiths has written three honorary doctorate salutes, as well as 10 letters of congratulations for the 2022 cohort of Herb Alpert Award in the Arts winners, on behalf of President Ravi S. Rajan.

To gain context on tone and vision, Katherine reviewed examples of previous honorary degree citations and Herb Alpert Award congratulatory letters, as well as prior written materials from President Rajan, including an acceptance letter for international students, a winter letter to staff and a spring address to students, faculty and staff that reflected on CalArts’ accomplishments. She also turned to the Institute’s style guide, which provided guidance on language and grammar usage based on entries from both the Chicago Manual of Style and the Associated Press Stylebook, as well as preferred styles accepted within the CalArts community.

“The best writing often begins with reading,” said Katherine. “Executive messaging is no different. Developing a word bank and lexicon to craft a leader’s message is vital to achieving an authentic tone.”

CalArts confers Honorary Doctor of Arts degrees to individuals who have consistently represented the bold innovation and visionary creativity championed by the Institute, and who have made extraordinary contributions to contemporary arts and culture. Prior recipients include Roy Lichtenstein, Henry Mancini and Frank O. Gehry. The 2022 recipients were jazz musician Charles Lloyd, composer Wayne Shorter and bassist, singer and songwriter esperanza spalding.

With limited space and a rigid word count, Katherine worked in close collaboration with not only Director of Creative Services Stuart Smith but also Interim Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer Marylou Ferry, with whom she and Tripepi Smith Art Director Kevin Bostwick previously partnered on the $635 million Campaign for Claremont McKenna College.

The Herb Alpert Award in the Arts (HAAIA) is given annually to risk-taking, mid-career artists working in the fields of dance, film/video, music, theatre and the visual arts. The award was founded and conceived by legendary musician, philanthropist and artist Herb Alpert and his Grammy-winning vocalist wife, Lani Hall. Each awardee receives a $75,000 unrestricted prize and residency at CalArts, which administers the prize on behalf of the Herb Alpert Foundation.

This year’s winners, according to HIAAIA Director Irene Borger, share several factors: “They work across genres; they view audiences as participants; they provocatively connect the past to the present to imagine a new future.”

Katherine customized each congratulatory letter with the name and discipline of the recipient, as well as a reference to the rationale for their recognition.

“Thank you! These are beautiful,” said Ferry.

A private university located in Valencia and founded by Walt Disney, CalArts was incorporated in 1961 as the first U.S. degree-granting, higher-learning institution for students of visual and performing arts. A multidisciplinary community of artists, CalArts’ ongoing educational endeavor is grounded in openness, experimentation, critical engagement and creative freedom.

City of Cypress Taps Tripepi Smith For Comms Support for New State Environmental Policy

In April 2021, the City of Cypress and Mike Balliet Waste Consulting tapped Tripepi Smith to assist with public outreach and education regarding SB1383, a new California state law intended to reduce organic waste disposal into landfills. The regulation requires residents and businesses to place organic waste in a designated bin or cart to ensure it is recycled properly. Through this statewide effort, California hopes to achieve a 75% reduction of organic waste in landfills and to rescue at least 20% of currently disposed surplus edible food by 2025.

“SB 1383 is the largest change to the way residents and businesses dispose of their waste since recycling was implemented a few decades ago,” said Management Analyst Kirsten Graham. “We are grateful for the work Tripepi Smith is doing to assist us in delivering clear and concise communications about SB1383 so this can be as smooth a transition as possible for our community.”

SB1383 is only effective if community members are aware of the change and feel equipped with the knowledge they need to adapt. Therefore, the policy explicitly calls for government agencies to provide community outreach and education to ensure residents are ready to participate when their city rolls out the new organic waste recycling service.

Tripepi Smith deployed several team members on this project, including Business Analyst Sara Madsen, Senior Graphic Designer Kjerstin Wingert and Junior Business Analyst Kylie Benzing. The team collaborated to provide digital and print design collateral in three languages with information about what the new law means for community members. Deliverables included social media advertising, website content development, and informational postcards.

“Asking residents to make a habit change this big requires solid and pervasive education to support them,” said Sara. “We’re proud to support the City of Cypress as they prepare to kickoff their organic waste recycling in the city. Additionally, we all benefited from the decades of experience and insights that Mike Balliet provided to the entire rollout plan.”

City of Pasadena Taps Tripepi Smith for Guidance During Redistricting Process

The City of Pasadena concluded its redistricting process on December 13, 2021 with the second reading of the ordinance adopting new City Council district boundaries. The City worked closely with Tripepi Smith Business Analyst Allison Torres, who helped brainstorm the City’s outreach strategy, provided progress updates on the implemented outreach methods by creating a robust Outreach Report and supported all outreach efforts.

“Participating in the redistricting process leads to a better understanding of community needs and lays the groundwork for achieving a strong, collective voice. This is a complex process that requires close collaboration between special legal counsel, a demographer and, in our case, two outreach firms,” said Pasadena City Clerk Mark Jomsky. “Thanks to Tripepi Smith’s unique expertise in the redistricting space, the City was able to carry out its aggressive outreach strategy and conclude a successful redistricting process.”

As part of its work, Tripepi Smith researched and outlined the City’s outreach methods in a nearly 50-page document. The City leveraged local organization partnerships to assist in spreading the word of the City’s redistricting process and created physical mailers and digital advertisements which were placed in ethnic media outlets.

“The City exceeded the requirements of outreach for its redistricting process to ensure that all community members had a chance to be involved,” said Allison. “Tripepi Smith is proud to have been a part of this collaborative effort.”

An Executive Interview with Retired City Manager Mike Egan

Retired City Manager Mike Egan

What initially prompted you to get involved with local government?

I was in the private sector out of college but always had an interest in government and public policy. I became acquainted with a City Manager who mentored me toward finding an entry-level opportunity in a City Manager’s Office. I loved the work from day one and never looked back.

Why did you want to become a city manager?

In every field I’ve ever worked in, I gravitated toward management and leadership. I like to face challenges and find ways to lead and motivate people in important work. Everything we do in local government is important and meaningful work. There is nothing more rewarding than taking on a significant challenge and coming to a solution through creativity, hard work and consensus building. Every single day is different and challenging. Unexpected challenges rise frequently. You have to be on your toes and pay attention. You have to surround yourself with smart and capable people. I can’t think of a more challenging or more rewarding career.

What was the most important part about your job as a City Manager?

Protecting the City staff team and ensuring they have the support and tools to do their jobs, often in an extremely challenging environment. In any political environment where there are competing agendas, there can be elements that try to undermine staff members just trying to do their jobs. The Manager needs to ensure their staff knows they will be supported in implementing the City’s policies and practices.

Which City project are you most proud of during your years as a City Manager?

There really are too many to pick one, but the one that has had the longest impact probably means the most. In the early ‘90s, as crime was rising throughout the country, we were certainly not immune in Bellflower. But, moreso, we were a very modestly funded agency and were under tremendous financial pressure to provide adequate public safety services. Our infrastructure was also simultaneously failing. The community was very conservative and not inclined to raise taxes to pay for additional services.

So, we built a coalition of community members to lead brainstorming on the problem. They ultimately decided to take a tax measure to the voters to raise service levels. We held countless community meetings to explain the problems and how the proposal came about. Voters ultimately approved the measure and a substantial investment in service and infrastructure investment began, which continues to this day. But it wasn’t just passing the measure that had value. The community learned it could largely control its own destiny and improve its own quality of life. The spirit of that effort lives on today with strong Council and community leadership and the City of Bellflower continues to make progress. I left the City eight years ago but love to go back and see progress continue and community pride grow.

What are the greatest challenges facing City Managers in California today?

Expansion of partisan politics into local government is definitely one of the greatest challenges. Cities have long held to the principle of non-partisan elections and governance. Cities are, first and foremost, municipal corporations formed to provide critical services that protect and impact lives every day. Political parties are formed to bolster one group and ideology at the expense of another. Cities need to focus on providing service and responding to challenges. Challenges rise regularly. Debate can be healthy, but debate along rigid partisan lines is a detriment to getting things done.

Limited resources has always been another challenge, but that seems to be reaching a breaking point. As resources become scarcer, Sacramento puts more demands on cities. Cities usually recognize the problems they face and are typically willing to tackle them, but cities don’t always have the necessary resources. In fact, before they are allowed to move forward with incorporation, communities interested in forming a City must face a review by the Local Agency Formation Commission (LAFCO) to determine if they are financially capable of providing necessary City services.

Homelessness is a clear example of one of the most pressing problems where cities are being asked to step up while dealing with limited resources. Homeless services are basically a welfare service. Most cities would not have been allowed to incorporate when they did if they had proposed to provide welfare services. They had no revenue source to accommodate it, and still don’t today. That’s not to say cities don’t have a role to play in addressing the crisis—they do. The state can mandate all it wants but, without adequate resources, the problem won’t get resolved.

Last (but not least), pension liability is a ticking time bomb. There will likely be more municipal bankruptcies in the near future.

What is your favorite way/place to interact with the residents of your City?

At community events. When residents see you at local events, they are often more comfortable approaching and getting to know you. We always try to make City Hall an inviting place, but coming there can sometimes be intimidating. Every opportunity to mingle with residents in a relaxed setting is a valuable opportunity to open lines of communication.

What is the role of a City Manager in upholding the public’s trust in local government?

The City Manager has to ensure that processes are available and equally accessible to anyone who wants to participate in community decision-making. The Manager has to ensure that policies and practices are implemented consistently and without favoritism to any group or individual.

How are cities shaping the future of California?

Cities are where most people live, and where people experience the impacts of public policies, new ideas and new technologies. We live in dynamic times with rapidly changing technology and business models affecting us differently every day. Because cities are all so different, they provide a breadth of experience to measure what works and what doesn’t. It’s not always pretty, but cities implement test and revise innovations (like ride share programs, bike share programs, building efficiencies, transportation efficiencies and communications technologies) to make California work better.

When you’re not busy working, how do you like to spend your time? What hobbies do you have?

My wife Teresa and I love to travel: seeing new places and experiencing the world’s architecture, art, food and culture. We have been to 30 U.S. states so far but want to visit all 50. We’re checking another one off the list by going to Alaska this summer. We’ve been to a number of European countries and, next year, we’ll go back to see more.

We are also foodies. We love to try new restaurants, especially independent ones. We’re always looking for great food experiences. We particularly like fusion food where chefs blend the flavors and cooking style of different cultures to create entirely new dishes. When I’m not at a new restaurant, I love to cook at home for family and friends—it relaxes me.

And, of course, I’ve been enjoying USC Football ever since my Dad took me when I was a little kid. Going to games makes me remember my Dad and feel close to him. We go to all the home games and at least one away game a year. The whole tailgate experience and college spirit is invigorating.

What has been one of your greatest professional challenges, and how did you address it?

A quick caveat: by far, most of the elected officials I’ve worked with are individuals of high integrity. But a few have wanted to use their positions to inappropriately grant favor to friends or family for personal gain. I had to stand up to say “no.” Every City Manager that has been in the business for a while will face such challenges, but it can be scary and intimidating to make that stand for the first time. Most importantly, I had to communicate the importance of ethics, integrity and fairness with the whole Council and the entire organization and make sure the support was there. Councils need to be committed to upholding ethical standards in their organizations and support the Manager in safeguarding ethical practices.

What has your work in public service taught you?

That the world needs committed public professionals to guard the integrity of our institutions and processes. They are frequently under assault.

What book is on your nightstand right now?

“The Power Broker: Robert Moses and the Fall of New York” by Robert Caro. I’ve read two of the four Caro volumes on Lyndon Johnson and they were incredible. I heard about this book from a friend. Caro’s detailed research and rich story telling capacity are a tremendous gift to experience.

While the role is new, Sara is familiar to Tripepi Smith clients. For the last year, Sara has been working on a part-time basis with the firm while she completed her academic career.

“My work with Tripepi Smith has been exciting and is exactly the kind of work I hoped to be doing when I graduated from college. Maheen is a recent graduate from the University of Southern California Sol Price School of Public Policy, where she completed a rigorous academic career that saw her complete both a BA and her MPA in five year period. Her academic experience paired with her prior professional background make her a great match for the Tripepi Smith team.

While completing her undergraduate studies, Maheen was an intern at the City of Rolling Hills Estates where she researched, compiled, and analyzed data for administrative matters and created news releases, public service announcements for public information campaigns. Maheen was also intricately involved in the development of the City’s  Emergency Preparedness Guide and the Neighborhood Watch Guide. She was enrolled in a progressive degree program and earned her Masters in Public Administration in May 2019 from the University of Southern California along with a graduate certification in City and County Management.

Tracy Extends Agreement with Tripepi Smith

Tracy - Inside the TriangleThe City of Tracy has renewed its agreement with Tripepi Smith for a second year. With strong staff support and accolades from the City Council to both staff and Tripepi Smith, the City Council voted 5-0 to renew a series of marketing and economic development initiatives, including Tripepi Smith’s work.

In the coming year, Tripepi Smith will continue running digital ad campaigns for the City across LinkedIn, Facebook and Google while also providing graphic design services. The goal of the City’s effort is to raise awareness of the opportunities available in Tracy to start a business or take advantage of Tracy’s business-friendly programs and development opportunities.

Tracy has a booming economy and the City is focused on balancing all aspects of growth to enhance the quality of life for residents and businesses within the City.

“We offer a lot for entrepreneurs and we want them to think of Tracy when starting up their businesses or coming to California,” said Shelley Burcham, Economic Development Manager for the City of Tracy. “Tripepi Smith has been a key partner to the City, and has helped create and implement messaging, advertisements and brand awareness for Tracy across the United States. The team is fun to work with, smart and has deep knowledge of digital platforms which has taken our economic development marketing to the next level.

Tripepi Smith was engaged by Tracy in 2017 based upon a demonstrated history of successfully supporting public agency economic development work and a strong reputation for graphic design deliveries. Tripepi Smith team members Ryder Todd Smith, president, Melanie James, business analyst, and Karen Villaseñor, junior business analyst, worked hand-in-hand with Tracy’s staff to drive traffic and eyeballs to the City’s website and social media platforms.

“Tracy staff are proud of their city and the opportunities its booming economy is creating. The city is well-positioned geographically to meet the needs of numerous businesses,” said Melanie. “City staff have been forward-thinking in their approach to reach business leaders and site selection professionals to advance the Tracy brand, and we are excited to be back for another year of work with the team.”

With the renewed agreement, the campaign will shift to drive traffic to a soon-to-be-launched economic development website. The theme, however, will remain the same: Inside the Triangle. Tracy’s location on the edge of the Bay Area provides more affordable housing options with training and driving access to the Bay Area. As a result, the city has benefited from the demand of logistics companies while experiencing increased workforce housing demands. However, the City’s efforts to drive higher paying local jobs to keep workers off freeways and in town have also seen results.

About Tracy

Think Inside the Triangle.” The City aspires to preserve and improve the quality of life for its residents so it may become the most prosperous community in California. Tripepi Smith Refreshes NHA Advisors Brand

NHA AdvisorsTripepi Smith recently completed a brand refresh process for NHA Advisors, LLC, a leading municipal advisor to California local government agencies. The project entailed the creation of a style guide, tagline, graphics to be used in proposals and other updated materials. The goal of the project was to refine the NHA Advisors’ brand and clarify their “voice” as they continue to expand their market presence.

“NHA Advisors serves a diverse client base of public agencies, but we are focused on delivering strategic and innovative financial advice that is complementary to the agency’s policies and goals. These issues are intertwined and require three-dimensional analysis and thinking,” said Craig Hill, managing principal with NHA Advisors. “Tripepi Smith led a holistic branding process that forced important considerations by our team as we refreshed our marketing efforts. The firm’s understanding of local government and business practices yielded excellent results for our team.”

Tripepi Smith’s work extended into the creation of a style guide that lays out the numerous ways to use the updated logo, including the maximum and minimum sizes, primary and accent color usage, as well as the typography to be used for consistency and a unifying effect. Tripepi Smith cleaned up NHA Advisors’ logo, expanded its color palette and added to its typography options.

To aid the visual aspects of NHA Advisors’ proposals, a set of icons were created to be used intermittently throughout text-heavy sections, increasing aesthetics or highlighting key points and takeaways. Graphics explaining the firm’s unique approach to municipal advisory work were also developed for reports and presentations. Lastly, Tripepi Smith also delivered new business cards, envelopes and digital letterheads.

“This was a creative challenge. NHA Advisors offers nuanced and thoughtful advice on complex subjects. Striking a balance between a simple yet sophisticated message was an exciting challenge,” stated Kjerstin Nichter, graphic designer for Tripepi Smith. “It was clear from our engagement that this is a team of deep analytical thinkers. We enjoyed the experience and look forward to helping them integrate the brand throughout their marketing efforts.”
